Ballast is a dense mixture of sand and gravel that form a rough, coarse aggregate used in an extensive range of construction applications. Primarily this aggregate is used in heavy-duty work and for practical uses such as making concrete.
The ballast that we supply our clients with comes in two different size, 10mm and 20mm. Unlike some suppliers, we ensure that when delivered to you your aggregate is as dry as possible. As with all of our aggregates, it is washed and screened before delivery. However, we appreciate that when ballast is wet it becomes heavier and harder to work with. We do everything we can to ensure our ballast is dried as much as possible before delivery.
10mm is primarily mixed with cement to create retaining walls and shallow footings. You can also use 10mm for domestic applications such as on fence posts and garden paths. 20mm on the other hand can be used to manufacture concrete, helping to form concrete slabs as bases for garages, sheds, conservatories or other extensions. Unlike 10mm, you cannot use 20mm for drainage because of it’s high fines content. It can however be stored outside without the risk of wastage.
The main uses of Ballast are
- Sub bases
- Pathways Footings
- Foundations
- Filling voids in hardcore
- Concrete mixes
